Natural Soapmaking (once Soap Naturally): Soapmaking information
How to Obtain Advice On Making Soap

dot

All recipes collected on the Natural Soapmaking (once Soap Naturally) Web are written by soapmakers for soapmakers, and might sometimes use "jargon" terms to describe various ingredients, methods and aspects of the soapmaking process, which are not immediately recognised by all. Here are a few examples:

  • CP (Cold Process), HP (Hot Process), CPHP (CrockPot Hot Process), DWCP (Discounted Water Cold Process) (soapmaking methods)
  • lye, NaOH, caustic soda, caustic solution (all referring to the alkali used in the process)
  • tallow, lard, pomace (common soapmaking fats)
  • discount, superfat (applying to the calculations of the water and alkali amounts)
  • trace, gel, insulation, curing (phases of the soapmaking process)

Do not let these "strange" terms put you off making soap! Soapmaking only requires a few basic ingredients and tools, which most of us already have in the kitchen pantry, or can easily get from the nearest supermarket. Making your own soap will give you great satisfaction, and reward you with a product that is gentle on your skin, and can be the most eco-friendly answer to all cleaning problems!

For those of you who are just moving their first tentative steps in the fascinating world of natural handmade soap, as well as for seasoned soapmakers who have "special" questions not answered elsewhere, here are our suggestions for obtaining qualified information and advice:
